On 2026-10-10 we ran 10 of these tools and 5 ran. Each was installed in a throwaway sandbox and asked the same 15 questions about a 560-note test vault (daily notes, projects, meetings, people, with near misses planted). The questions follow LongMemEval's five abilities, three each: find one fact, reason across notes, reason about dates, keep up with a fact that a later note changed, and say so when the vault does not hold the answer. A judge (gpt-6-astra, three passes) marked the answers. Claude Code with plain file tools did the same as a control.
Check before you install: mcp-obsidian (the most-starred MCP server here needs Obsidian open with the Local REST API plugin, as do obsidian-mcp-tools and obsidian-mcp-server); obsidian-mcp (all 15 right, at six times the tokens of plain file tools).
If you already use Claude Code in the vault folder, you may not need any of these to ask your notes a question: with no tool installed it answered all 15, including the three the vault cannot answer, for the fewest tokens.
Listed by tokens used. Accuracy does not rank them: every tool that ran, and Claude Code with plain file tools, answered all 15 questions. One run each, on a 560-note vault.
What we found: Every one that ran answered all 15, and so did the control: on a vault this size, search and read are enough. What differs is cost. The control used 32,109 tokens; the tools used 1.7 to 6.1 times that. The three skills that ran did their searching with Claude Code's own file tools, not through the skill. And 3 of the 10 could not run without the Obsidian desktop app open. See the control run →

Once Claude can read and write your Obsidian vault, the vault is the agent's long-term memory, so we judge an Obsidian MCP server, skill or plugin the way memory is judged. LongMemEval (ICLR 2025) tests five abilities with 500 questions: finding a fact, reasoning across sessions, reasoning about time, keeping up with updates, and abstaining when the answer is not there. Commercial assistants and long-context models lost 30% of their accuracy over sustained interactions, and the paper splits a memory system into three stages: indexing, retrieval and reading. On LoCoMo (ACL 2024), conversations of about 600 turns over up to 32 sessions, models with long contexts or retrieval still lag far behind people. Plain files are not the weak point: an agent that kept the conversations in a file and searched them with grep-style tools scored 74.0% on LoCoMo, above the 68.5% Mem0 reported (Letta, a benchmark write-up, not a paper). Markdown notes, which is what Obsidian stores, can hold a memory well; what decides the result is how the agent finds what it needs and keeps it current.
